Once the domain of potato farmers, a still growing community of mostly residential neighborhoods has evolved in the area surrounding Hightstown, New Jersey. Its close proximity to both New York City and Philadelphia has helped accentuate this trend.

Sometimes both Hightstown and East Windsor are referred to as Exit 8 of the New Jersey Turnpike as a convenient means of location.

An area east of the turnpike is known as Twin Rivers, built in the early 1970's as the state's first Planned Urban Development. It gained popularity as it was within an easy commute of New York. Then followed a substantial number of single family homes.

Hightstown is also home to tree-lined streets, charming lakes and Victorian houses.Founded in 1721, it is a culturally rich environment and the home of the well known Peddie School.

The East Windsor Regional School District serves both communities.
